Nestor Torres Returns to Boulder, CO for The 62nd Conference on World Affairs

Nestor will be participating once again at the prestigious Conference On World Affairs from April 5 through April 9th, 2010. Hosted by the University of Colorado in Boulder, the Conference on World Affairs, originally founded in 1948 as a forum on international affairs, expanded rapidly in its early years to encompass the arts, media, science, diplomacy, technology, environment, spirituality, politics, business, medicine, human rights, and so on. Roger Ebert, who has participated in the CWA for four decades, refers to the CWA as “the Conference on Everything Conceivable.” Each April 100 participants representing a wide range of backgrounds gather in Boulder for what The New York Times calls “a week-long extravaganza of discussion and debate” on approximately 200 panels, plenaries and performances. Conference participants discuss issues on an impromptu basis—a refreshing alternative to the specialized gatherings of academia and the business world. Molly Ivins, a frequent participant over 25 years, wrote that CWA offers “whole new ways of looking at old questions and information that can transform the way you look at things.” Ebert says, “Why is this week like lifeblood for me? Once we settle into our life’s careers, most of us charge the line with our heads down. I have a tendency, for example, to think the world revolves around movies. Once a year at the Conference, I am forced to think on subjects not of my own choosing. I get to talk to people from other worlds.”Nestor will share the stage at the Mackie Auditorium on Tuesday April 6 with Dave Grusin, JustoAlmario, Bijoux Barbosa, Rony Barrak, Charlie Bisharat, Lillian Boutté, Oscar Castro-Neves, Brad Goode, Don Grusin, Mike Marlier, Shodekeh, & Tjupurru. “It is a tremendous honor and a great joy to be part of this yearly event, not only as an artist sharing the stage with such a distinguished and diverse group of artists, but as a panelist and lecturer as well”.

NEW ALBUM

nouveau latino“Nouveau Latino is about the groove and the dancer, about romance and seduction through melody”. It is also a testament to Torres’ impeccable credentials as the pre-eminent Latin Jazz flautist of his generation.

In his brand new CD, Nouveau Latino, Nestor Torres returns to his Latin roots with a fresh approach, impeccable musicianship, and irresistible improvisations. Featuring songs from stars like Celia Cruz and Ruben Blades, Torres’ interpretations of these great Latin hits appeal to those discovering the songs for the first time as much as those who remember them.

“Nouveau Latino is about the groove and the dancer, about romance and seduction through melody”

11 hits from the 60s through the 80s, plus a couple of Latin Jazz Standards, makes this a great collection of songs that helped shape an era. “The blessing of having been part of the New York Salsa scene at its hottest cannot be expressed in words. Finally, the time is right for me to celebrate and share with my fans - and the world – at least part of a legacy I owe so much to”.

Nestor Torres pays homage to some of Salsa’s greatest stars, from the beginning of the genre to its heyday. Mon Rivera & Joe Cuba; Celia Cruz, Willie Colon, Cheo Feliciano & Ruben Blades. The Fania All Stars and Omar Alfanno. These artists are part of a dynasty responsible for creating a sound that transcended the Latino experience and went on to become an integral part of the mainstream. With Cuban music as the backbone and NYC’s El Barrio as the breeding ground, Salsa music came about as artists and musicians from different parts of the Caribbean and Latin America came together, bringing their own music and traditions to the mix: Puerto Rican Bomba & Plena, Brazil’s Samba, Dominican Republic’s Merengue, Colombia’s Cumbia, and Panama’s take on it all through the compositions of Blades and Alfanno.

Songs:

QUÍMBARA - lyrics
The opening track is one of the best-known Salsa Music hits by Celia Cruz, undisputedly “The Queen of Salsa”. Her voice and image are recognized the world over, well beyond the Latino realm. She recorded this song in 1974 with Johnny Pacheco, one of the creators of the Salsa movement. I chose to include this song on the record because I love it, because it is universally known, and because it is very compatible with the percussive nature of my flute playing style.

PETITE/ MUJER DIVINA (Woman Divine) - lyrics
One of my producers, Milton Salcedo, insisted that I should do this song, and for good reason; it has a great melody as well as an infectious cha-cha groove, which makes it appealing not just to Latin Music lovers and dancers, but to the general public at large. Its composer, Hector Rivera, under the title ‘Petite’ in 1961, originally released it as an instrumental song. 5 years later, Joe Cuba and his Sextet recorded a vocal version, which became a big hit.

ISLA DEL ENCANTO - lyrics
This song was very popular in the mid 70s; first it was a big hit by a group called “Orchestra Broadway” and later by Hector Lavoe and The Fania All Stars. It is one of my personal favorites, for it reminds me of my early days in New York City, when I would play opposite Orchestra Broadway and hear the song played live many times. This recording pays homage to those days, and to my native land of Puerto Rico.

COCINANDO
A Latin Jazz Standard by a Latin Jazz Master, Ray Barretto. This was recorded live in the studio, in Puerto Rico.

C.P.
Clare Fischer is one of the most important arrangers and composers in the last 60 years. His composition’s title refers to the initials of the legendary Puerto Rican pianist Charlie Palmieri. Latin Jazz at the highest level. http://www.clarefischer.com/

KARA KA TIS KI - lyrics
The ‘Plena’ is a Puerto Rican rhythm. Mon Rivera, a native of my hometown, Mayaguez, popularized it in the late ‘50s early 60s. He pioneered the trombone sound that Eddie Palmieri and Willie Colon developed. We recorded this one live in the studio. The song is another showcase for the flute’s percussive possibilities.

EL RATON- lyrics
Although this is the title that appears on the CD credits, the song uses only the introduction’s riff and chorus (hook) of Cheo Feliciano’s composition. My version of El Raton is an urban tale with my lyrics (and an additional ‘coro’ or hook by Ramon Martinez) and my flow in which I reveal my true identity as The Pied Piper Of Hamelin.

SOÑANDO CON PUERTO RICO - lyrics
Truly a classic by Puerto Rican singer songwriter Bobby Capo. Flute, bass, and 3 conga drums played by two percussionists played live… the performance speaks for itself

EL GRAN VARÓN - lyrics
This is one of the first hits by songwriter Omar Alfanno. Salsa pioneer Willie Colon performed this controversial song about a father and his transvestite son. Even though radio programmers refused to play it because of its content, El Gran Varon became one of Willie Colon’s greatest hits. http://www.omaralfanno.com/

PABLO PUEBLO - lyrics
There are no words to adequately describe the genius, power and influence of Ruben Blades’ work. This song is better known as a Salsa hit recorded by Blades and Willie Colon. My version is inspired by Ruben’s own acoustic interpretation, which I discovered almost by accident while browsing his website trying to choose which of his songs I would include in my CD. http://www.rubenblades.com/

MARIA CERVANTES SUITE
My father, a brilliant pianist and vibraphone player in his own right, taught me this song many years ago. It’s been part of my repertoire for many years, and at last the time was right to record it. With a brilliant arrangement by Milton Salcedo based on a rhythm arrangement by Juan Vicente Zambrano, this composition by Puerto Rican Latin Jazz Pioneer and Pianist Noro Morales is a timeless Latin Jazz standard. The Solo Flute introduction is a live recording during my Japan Tour in 2005.
